We had an excellent dinner

We had the Dinner Course B.
It was a set of appetizer, fish dish, meat dish, dessert, drink, and bread.
It was a Friday, but all the indoor tables were full. There were about four other groups besides us. It seemed like some of the hotel's guests were there as well.
I think it's best to make a reservation beforehand.
All the food was delicious. As you'd expect from Shinshu, the vegetables were very fresh, and the chestnut creme brûlée we had at the end was particularly delicious.
I'd like to visit again.

Absolutely Wonderful

Obuse is one of those cities that lie off the beaten track but are well worth the effort to get to. We had a wonderful stay at Vent Vert spending 4 nights three weeks ago. The Inn is run by the most gracious family who are eager to help guide you to wonderful places to see and eat. The rooms are lovely, the breakfasts are incredible and include home made croissants, the most delicious coffee, home made jam, and fresh fruit grown locally. You owe it to yourself to splurge on dinner, cooked by the innkeeper's sons who trained in France. Obuse is a little jewel. The master woodcut print maker, Hokusai, spent his last, but incredibly productive years, in this town and it is now home to a first class, modern museum dedicated exclusively to his work. There is a charming lamp museum, chestnut confectionaries, a revitalized sake brewery and excellent restaurants. One restaurant specializes in Soba noodles, and treats this delicate dish with reverence. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with hand made furniture, hand painted menus, and beautiful appointments. Another restaurant has an open kitchen with a wood burning oven and specializes in grilled meats, fish, and the freshest vegetables. We would never have found these spots without the help of our gracious hosts at Vent Vert, whose warmth and kindness made us feel so at home and hoping to return.

Security issues but otherwise ok

It was pretty much impossible to find anywhere else to stay in Obuse that you can book in advance from overseas. We were looking forward to our stay here and the room was fine, very spacious for Japan and clean.
BUT we found the hostess quite unwelcoming - notably so compared to everywhere else we stayed in Japan - and we had a security problem when someone, presumably an employee, let themselves into our room one evening as we were getting ready for dinner. The door was locked and they opened it with a key, then backed off when we yelled. It took a second for us to get decent before we opened the door and the corridor was empty. So if it was just an honest mistake, I'd have expected them to hang around and make their apologies, not scarper.
Perhaps we were just unlucky, but I definitely wouldn't go back because of this.

Perfect Christmas at the Vent-Vert

My wife, our small baby (2mo), and I stayed at the Vent-Vert for Christmas this year. It was an excellent find! The location is walking distance to all major Obuse sights. Easy to walk to dinner/shopping areas; about 20 minute drive to snow monkey park and 20 minutes to downtown Nagano as well. We had dinner at the Vent-Vert for christmas eve and it was a really fantastic french meal. We woke to a white Christmas and we were able to see the snow on the mountains and on the streets of Obuse from our windows. Heat worked well, so were were never cold at all.
The rooms were spotlessly clean and very charming with wood floors and paneling. Great view of the mountains. The hostess was extremely kind and accommodating. She found a church for us to go for a christmas eve service and gave us the times and directions to the church.
Beds were hard, but hey...it's Japan after all. Plenty of space in the room for our son's pack-n-play.
All in all we could not have asked for more for our christmas this year.

Rural Japan

What a relaxing comfortable small hotel this is. The rooms wereclean and welcoming - the owners of the hotel were charming. The township of Obuse offers a wonderful chance to experience rural Japan. The "club" restaurant at the historic sake brewery was delicious, offering high quality reasonably priced Japanese cuisine. The Obuse winery (established in the 1800's) was a great little find - friendly and informal - hidden in the streets of Obuse. Vent Vert's French Restaurant offered fine french cooking -also reasonably priced.
Riding the bicycles (400 yen per day) provided for tourists by this enterprising small town allows you to leisurely experience rural tranquility in Japan. Lovely. We stayed for 5 days. We were sad to leave.
